Tool for online and offline geocaching

Advanced geocaching tool for Linux downloads geocaches including their description, hints, difficulty levels and images. Searching for caches in your local database is a matter of seconds. Premium account needed for premium caches.

  • Map view - supporting Open Street Maps and Open Cycle Maps by default, configurable for other map types, including google maps.
  • GPS view - shows the distance and direction to the selected geocache.
  • Cache details - all necessary details are available even in offline mode.
  • Paperless geocaching features - take notes for a geocache on the go, see the hints and spoiler images, check the latest logs.
  • Multicache calculation help - Let your phone do the math for you. Working for some of the multi-stage geocaches, AGTL finds the coordinate calculations and let you enter the missing variables.
  • Fieldnotes support - Ever came home after a long tour and asked yourself which geocaches you found? Never again: Log your find in the field and upload notes and log text when you're at home. Review them on the geocaching website and post the logs.
  • Text-to-Speech-Feature! - Select a target, activate TTS and put your headphones on to enjoy completely stealth geocaching.
  • Download map tiles for selected zoom levels - for offline use.
  • Advanced waypoint handling - AGTL finds waypoints in the geocache descriptions, in the list of waypoints and even in your notes. For your convenience, they're displayed on the map as well - see where you have to go next.
  • Search for places - in the geonames.org database to navigate quickly.
  • Sun compass - Compensates the lack of a magnetic compass.
  • Instant update feature - Follow web site updates as soon as possible.

Excellent app. The UI could be simpler though.

I understood that is how it should work, but I have tested the 'Download Details' function while viewing the 'info' for the selected cache, also download details for all visible caches, and tried to download the overview again. The cache status does not change from normal. I am using release 0.7.0.2. I would try to 'purge' the downloaded caches, but I prefer to not lose my finds.

Still a great program!

You can always click on "Download Details" in the geocache details view. That will ensure you have the latest data.

However, the archive/not archived status should be updated by a Download Overview.

Is there a simple way to remove caches from the downloaded database? I have noticed that once a cache is downloaded, subsequent detail downloads do not seem to update the data. An example would be a cache that was downloaded, then was archived on geocaching.com. Later detail downloads do not change the status from 'normal' to 'archived'. Thanks again for a great program!

There's a bug fix release available in extras-testing and extras-devel (0.7.0.1).

If you like this app and haven't voted yet, please do so at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58964 , thanks!

Thanks Daniel. I discovered that disabling the View Description in HTML option allowed the program to function, but was unable to return here and comment. I'll try your latest release shortly!

There was a missing dependency. Either disable "View description with HTML" or install the latest update, 0.7.0.0-1.

I tried the 0.7.0.0 release from extras-development, and I must say the user interface looks very nice! I could never access the details of any cache that I selected from the map, though. I assume the menu to set the selected cache as the Target is available from the details page, because I couldn't find a way to do that, either. I reverted back to 6.1.5, but I can't wait to see the new release in action! Keep up the good work Daniel! I wish I was familiar enough with Python to assist!

The coordinate math functions are only available if you've selected a geocache which has coordinate math in it's description. The full details must bew downloaded, because otherwise there's no description for the geocache.

The formula must be in a specific format. In order to make most multi stage geocaches working, AGTL is somewhat tolerant about the format. However, the authors of the descriptions have proven to be very creative in finding new ways to express coordinates and formulas, so any programm will never recognize all formats.

Daniel, I have installed the latest version (6.1.5) but I still do not see the coordinate math functions that are visible in the screen shots. I did a complete remove and reinstall, not just an upgrade. Also, is it possible to "pin" North to the top of the screen in compas view? When moving slowly, close to the target, the compas tends to oscillate wildly. Thanks again for providing a great tool for this awsome hobby!

This is an outstanding app for GeoCaching, and I must congratulate Daniel on his continuing efforts to improve it!

How difficult would it be to use AGTL for finding Benchmarks as well as listed GeoCaches?

We need a tile server for additional map styles. As far as I can see, there's no such server for talkytoaster contour maps...

The bug fix is released and everything should be working again. Meanwhile, I'm still working on the next major release, featuring portrait mode, a slightly better map mode and dozens of other improvements.

Details are now downloading properly. :) Although now when I click "Download overview" I keep getting error saying "Please select a smaller part of the map.", no matter what size I choose.

Sorry, I didn't realize to push "Download Overview" earlier. I though that search would show overview.

Maybe there should be some simple manual or / and error messages that why something failed. Otherwise it seems to be a very good program!

Search is not intended to work for geocaches outside those already downloaded. This is a fundamental issue (we have no access on the geocaching.com database). Also, the search on specific parameters (like size) does only work for geocaches which details have been downloaded.

Does the search work for you for downloaded geocaches?

Search doesn't work (doesn't even show any error message if search fails...). Maps loads nicely, so its not internet connection's fault at least.

As the website keeps reverting to the old description, here's the long one: AGTL, the all-in-one solution for on- and offline geocaching, makes geocaching paperless! It downloads geocaches including their description, hints, difficulty levels and images. No premium account needed. Searching for caches in your local db is a matter of seconds.

  • Fieldnotes support - Ever came home after a long tour and wondered which of those geocaches you found? Never again: Log your find in the field and upload notes and log text when you're at home. Review them on the geocaching website and post the logs.
  • Multicache calculation help - Let your phone do the math for you. Working for the most multi-stage geocaches, AGTL finds the coordinate calculations and let you enter the missing variables.
  • Advanced waypoint handling - AGTL finds waypoints in the geocache descriptions, in the list of waypoints and even in your notes. For your convenience, they're displayed on the map as well - see where you have to go next.
  • Sun compass – Compensates the lack of a magnetic compass

AGTL is Open source and in active development.
