While I would agree some of us may have been under-appreciated due to the
limited involvement of the Council members in the greater NIT community, and
am disappointed at my own loss in the awards, at the same time I must admit
that of the people I know who *did* win, they certainly weren't "merely
friends" and certainly did make notable contributions.
P.S. If any of the N950 winners is looking to sell or trade... shoot me an
email please!

Michael, it's surprising, and even a little entertaining, to read
that "no activity happened in Maemo during last year". You're entitled
to have whatever opinion You like, but it seems to me, that most
people - really involved in Maemo - would call it more active year
*ever*, especially in light of things that are going to happen soon.
As per Your accusations vs. CA, I'm not sure if I should be even
commenting on them - as clearly, You don't have slightest point on how
CA rules were shaped, since when we discussed, and, overall, how those
rules came to life (probably, you don't have a clue about CA rules
too, but, whatever) - instead, relying on small, yet loud minority's
opinions from TMO.
---
Nevertheless, I wish You good luck at whatever "greener pastures"
You're going to. If You're going to enjoy it even partially as much,
as we do (and will, even more!) enjoy Maemo and it's Community, it's
probably going to be fun time for You :)

Exactly my observation...
I made a point of reviewing any I didn't recognise (which wasn't many) &
they've ALL made amazing contributions.

Re: Good bye!

there is absolutely nothing to be amused about here
and i'm not talking about Micheal's disappointment not getting a device, as
much as it put his "hitting a brick wall" statement in a questionable
light; wouldn't have minded keeping a brick i guess...
what may frustrate Micheal (and others, most likely, even thought the CA
winner list thread must already have debated this ad nauseam....) is the
fact that several if not all members of the Council won a N950;
a couple thoughts about this
no matter what personal likes or dislikes one may have for each of the
current Council member, they all made considerable contributions to the
Community and their being in the Council is but the most recent one (!)
what is maybe more questionable is that many of the CA devices were granted
on base of... missed coding competition opportunities, to put it bluntly.
is this what this community is all about? coding?
if that's the case, Micheal's statement appears under a different light
IF NOKIA decides to pull out of Maemo, more then coding is going to be
needed to save the community...
however this may be, nothing to be laughing about...

You clearly didn't follow all the threads, this was discussed in-depth.
Everyone agreed they should be allowed to partake too.
Re-read the criteria, whoever was deemed to have made the biggest
contribution were to be granted a CA.
That did not EXCLUDE people who contributed through coding efforts.
Generally such efforts have the biggest impact & require far more
effort/skill/time.
So it's only logical that more of such contributors would win out over
other community contributors.
I was disappointed that I didn't win, but I know my contributions
haven't had anywhere near the impact that others on the list have had.
Have an honest look at yourself, can you honestly say the opposite?
I noticed INABT didn't make the cut, that was very surprising.
But the competition was so tight, there was always going to be some
deserving users who missed out.

Thanks for wise words.
What surprised me most, was INABT reaction to his loss - of course, I talk about unpleasant surprise - but, I don't want to do "bashing on already dead horse".

with me on the go was exciting. Several years of active community
members and developers gave proof that that excitement was real.
Unfortunately all of that excitement had been extinguished once the
hardware hit a brick wall. This e-mail seems like a belated good-bye
seeing that no real activity in Maemo has happened in over a year. I
refer Maemo as both 5 and 6(MeeGo).
The last great stand, a.k.a. "Community Awards", was nothing more than a
front to give away hardware mostly to friends. This embodies the Maemo
community (perhaps Debian from where it was derived) as I saw it as a
self-centered, self-righteous body. The proof lies in the empty mailing
lists (which only became active when a free prize was dangled from a
stick), the lack of members running for council, the absence of news on
Linux/mobile sites, and the absence of change to the software ecosphere.
I do not discount the work done with the CSSU or kernel, but this work
can only go so far with the hardware they run on and with the limited
resources (2-3 people?) at hand. The purpose of this email is to not,
hypocritically, belittle others, but to wish them well on finding new
projects with a larger chance of success.
It is time for me to move on and wrap up this rant that will disappear
into the Internet Ocean of bits forever. I had fun while it lasted. I
engaged with new people and expanded my horizons a bit (never used dpkg
until Maemo). I hope another company considers a Linux phone in the
future, but I might have better luck wishing to see the tooth fairy.
Sincerely,
Michael
