Automatically grab avatars from social services for Contacts app

Posted on 2009-09-16 16:39 UTC by Heinrich Schäfer. Status: Implemented, milestone: Fremantle, Categories: Internet & Networking, Utilities.

The maemo 5 contact manager allows you to add a lot of details to a contact.

But it is very annoying to add images and personal informations if your contact list grows big.

Solution #3: Use Hermes

Posted on 2009-10-26 18:15 UTC by Andrew Flegg.

This is effectively a realisation of Solution #1. Hermes will retrieve information from Facebook & Twitter friends and add missing photos, birthdays, homepage URLs etc.

Future developments include manual mapping and additional services (gravatar.com is an obvious one, maemo.org as well perhaps?)

Solution #1: Grab contacts from facebook!

Posted on 2009-09-16 15:39 UTC by Heinrich Schäfer.

Both facebook and the contact manager feature an API, so it should be fairly simple to sync each other.

We need a tool that grabs Images, contact information and personal information of your friends from facebook and merges them with your contact list.

Solution #4: Having a native (non-Haze) Facebook telepathy account manager

Posted on 2009-10-31 13:25 UTC by Zaheer Merali.

Hermes is great and works very well, but it would be awesome if a native Telepathy backend for Facebook is created such that the contacts that come out of that have things like birthday and photo already in there. This would mean there would be no need for syncing manually. The merge contacts feature in contacts would handle the manual stuff that Hermes will soon have.

This of course could apply for other social services, Facebook is just an example.
