Another way to lock/unlock the device

Since people are increasingly using their mobile devices as personal computers, using email, storing corporate and confidential data, the security of these information became a high priority requirement.

However, there is a trade-off between security and usability. It is very easy to protect the (touch) screen to prevent the system to do some undesirable action. But adding a security layer to this mechanism (to avoid curious ppl) sometimes is not a good experience for the user.

I think the Maemo could give to the user the flexibility to choose the way of how to lock or unlock his device. Currently he can use a registered 'pin' number, but for many people, make a gesture on the screen would be faster, easier to decorate and more friendly.

Note: lock screen != lock device
lock screen -> to prevent undesirable actions (touches) on the screen.
lock device -> to prevent malicious or curious people to access the device data.

Delivering Java SE to Fremantle

The purpose of this proposal is to assess the demand and determine the best way to deliver a Java SE - runtime for Fremantle / Maemo 5.

Java SE is the runtime intended for Desktop systems, but implementations for Mobile Devices do exist. The possible target audience for a Java SE runtime on Fremantle is considerably smaller than for a Java ME implementation, but many business applications still provide Java interfaces for legacy compatibility. Providing the possibility to run these business applications might lower the barrier for corporations to consider using Maemo 5 in a corporate environment.

Ideally, this brainstorm proposal results in a Java SE Package available in the Fremantle-Repositories for easy distribution through the Maemo 5 App Manager.

This is not supposed to be yet another "Nokia should do it" proposal - if you want an implementation, please vote not only for the "Nokia-option", but place a 2nd vote on your favourite community solution so we will know where to invest our time first, should Nokia really decide not to buy an official License.

A MIDP - compatible Java ME runtime is present on most of today's smartphones, nearly all of the latest Nokia devices are delivered with Java ME available.

It is an established technology with a big developer base, there are many Applications and Games available, but currently there is no easy way for endusers to be able to run their MIDlets on the new Maemo 5 Platform.

Quoting wikipedia: SIM Application Toolkit (commonly referred to as STK) is a standard of the GSMto initiate actions which can be used for various value-added services.

So what are these value-added services? The most prominent would be sms encryption used by some banks to protect customer data sent over GSM. STK is supported in superold nokia bricks, as well as newest symbian/android smartphones. There's no reason why for example the n900 shouldnt support it.

Fast application launcher like quicksilver/gnome do

As a gnome user I've become addicted to gnome do, and I think that a similar program would be awesome for the N900. Ctrl-space and win!

Anyway I looked into it a little bit and even though there is some old port of mono for maemo I concluded that it's not the way to go.

I found another launcher called Kupfer http://kaizer.se/wiki/kupfer/ that does not require mono and is pretty similar. After some tinkering and compiling of libraries (namely python-gobject_2.16 to get gio) I actually got it compiled on the sdk. It ran, but didn't actually work.

The usage of this application is very simple.

Press your keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-space for example) and a dialogue pops up. By typing it suggests an application to launch based on what you've typed, and enter launches that application. The list is prioritized in such a way that the most popular hits come up first. You should be able to scroll down the list of matches.
Some of these programs can perform all sorts of tasks, but the most basic is to very quickly launch an installed application.

5 solutions for this brainstorm.
