Unleash Harmattan multitasking powers

Like many I was was blown away by the N9 UI, espacially in the way multitasking is presented.

Harmattan has clearly a significant edge over all competition in this respect (some competition may even never catch up), but I still think that we should start thinking of improvements for the next iteration (granted there will be one). Here are some suggestions, I suppose people may have already formulated similar ideas:

* Currently Harmattan supports a 3x3 or a 2x2 grid in the open application view, with controls of the apps disabled (you can only see the UI but not control it - please correct me if I'm wrong). I propose to add a 2x1 grid (only portrait) with controls *enabled*, which will effectively enable to have 2 applications running side by side. I believe a lot of applications would benefit from this layout (although I can't put my finger on any specific example) and it would be a real differentiator vs. all other platforms. Furthermore this feature would really benefit tablets (with bigger grids) where it is a shame to have a single app covering the whole screen as is currently the case. Access to this 2x1 grid would be through pinch-to-zoom. Note: actually this tiling mode was already implemented in some Meego prototype it seems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=5m79buEJQQY#t=255s

* Introduce a picture-in-picture mode (suggestion proposed by MINKIN2), whereby a thumbnail of an application (inset app) is displayed while another app is displayed fullscreen (fullscreen app). This is very similar to PIP mode in TV sets, it enables to perform one task (on the fullscreen app) while monitoring a status within another app (the inset app). In this mode, only the fullscreen app receives user input, the inset app can only be watched running. It is possible to move the inset app thumbnail within the screen (by dragging the thumbnail), it is possible to make the inset app fullscreen (by tapping into the thumbail), it is possible to make the inset app bigger/smaller (by pinch-to-zoom within the inset app thumbail).

* Introduce "open application folders" the same way "application folders" will probably be implemented. An "open application folder" is a group of open application arranged in a certain grid layout (the same way applications are organized in folders). Once you are in an "open application folder" you only see the thumbnails of the apps within the group, or scroll through the open apps within the group. Open application folders are created exactly the same way application folders are, except we operate on and open applications thumbnails instead of application icons. I am not sure about the best way to go from one "open application group" to another: a swipe or maybe a zoom-out.

Talk page for this brainstorm: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=74609

0 solutions for this brainstorm.

PDF page memory

The standard PDF reader that comes with N900 is great for reading a PDF document. In my opinion it lacks one very important feature, remembering what page you are on in the PDF document.

Using Mandriva with KDE I have gotten used to my PDF reader remembering the page I am on for each individual PDF document I might open.

I can imagine with all the talented people who contribute to Maemo that the programming to have the PDF reader remember not only the page it is on for the last document, but for any document, is not that hard to program. I would be extremely happy with anyone that would be able to make tgis possible, and I am sure I am not alone.

Please.

0 solutions for this brainstorm.

please I just purchased an N900 to replace my n97's (I have 3) and love linux. However my programming skills are poor at best. I would like to duplicate the sms / text calendar entrys to my symbian based phones in my business. Please. I can offer a small amount of money to make this happen please. I wish there were true compatibility between the N97 to the N900 (just an observation sorry)

Thank you all for your awesome work on so many other things! So far I love it much more than any android I have purchased / used! Why did nokia remove the purchase links for the N900??? Does that mean a new maemo device is coming very soon? Any idea if it will perform this sms text vcal / ical feature?

Thanks so much.

Add interaction to Notifications

Add the ability for user interaction with Notifications. Currently when a notification is displayed, you can only click on it, which generally takes you to the related application or you can dismiss it. I propose that we extend the ability of notifications so that depending on the application that generated it, you can perform a related action from the notification. This can save the user time from not having to open the application depending on the action performed in the notification. For example, a user gets a notification that an email has arrived. The email notification would display clickable universally recognized icons that represent the actions the user can take; delete the email, reply to the email, or mark as read. Similarily, a phone call notification could give you the ability to call the caller, view the contact details. This can be extended to other applications that wish to have notifications.

Maemo seems to be going for a fully-unified communications concept, and this is great, but the closer it gets to this goal, the more the remaining omissions stand out.

Emails should be merged with conversations, as emails are conceptually very similar to SMS messages. The solution(s) should be able to link emails to the contacts with that email address assigned to them.

Call logs should be displayed in this view as well, and...

...and all calls should be recordable, both the traditional audio-only variety as well as video calls.

...and finally, as brainstormed elsewhere, SMS message should be syncable to external (IMAP?) folders, and MMS messages should be both included in this unified display and syncable as per SMS.
