Implement portrait mode in Media Player (audio)

It should really be possible to use Fremantle Media Player in the portrait mode, at least when playing audio. A typical usage pattern would be to keep Fremantle device in your pocket while listening to music, then quickly take it out with one hand to browse through the list of tracks. Portrait mode has following advantages here:

1. You can easily hold the device with one hand (like Nokia 5800 and similar devices)

2. The portrait-oriented track list can show more tracks

3. As the device is already sitting vertically in your pocket, to let the headphone wire out, you do not need to rotate it.

Media player enhancements

Problem : Software on tablets not suitable for serious audiophiles. No EQ, poor navigation and management of playlists is very poor.

Description :

1. Players like the default media player on OS2008 and Canola do not have an equalizer. A good equalizer should provide both custom EQ as well as default builtins like "Rock", "Jazz" and so on which is common with many desktop media players as well as MP3 players.

2. Navigating around hundreds of music files is also a pain on most current media players on the tablets. Better solutions are required. For navigation, inspiration can be drawn from players like the iPod touch which provide an alphabetical scroll bar at the side which makes reaching to a song a snap, or the Sony Walkman Mp3 player with tabs for "A-F',"G-K" and so on at the top or various other interfaces.

When you have hundreds of songs on your tablet and you want to listen to THAT particular song, how do you do so? How many taps or scrolls are required to get to a song when you know the title of the song? How many taps or scrolls are required when you know the album? For a serious audiophile with a large library, FAST navigation is a very important requirements.

3. Other suggestions are on-the-device playlist support. Good media player software should support forming and saving playlists as well as transferring playlists in formats like m3u.

As you may or may not know the default headset coming with N900 doesn't support play/pause, next/forward, and volume up/dn and neither does N900 support other nokia headsets.

A control panel applet that recognizes the input from the buttons of your wired headset and translates them into actions.

More efficient and flexible use of internal flash

about 27GB of the N900 internal flash memory are reserved for a VFAT (FAT32) partition which is mounted on /home/user/MyDocs and exported as USB mass storage.

The VFAT filesystem is an ancient, slow, inefficient (cluster size, bad for many small files) non-POSIX compatible (no symlinks, permissions etc) filesystem and only used for maximum compatibility when exporting it via USB mass storage.

It would be nice if it could be replaced by a ext3 or any another modern POSIX filesystem and merged with the /home partition so that all advantages of those file systems can be used.

This would remove the 2GB limit for the home partition and make a more standard Linux home directory layout possible (eliminating MyDocs, new directories Pictures, Documents etc. in the home directory).

For USB mass storage mode file system images with any file system (e.g. FAT32, ext3, NTFS, HFS+ depending on the users desktop OS) and arbitrary size could be stored on the partition and exported using loop devices.
