Implementing portrait mode in Fremantle Messaging (i.e. email, IM, SMS, etc) will give the following advantages:

1. A user will be able to pull the device out of his pocket with one hand, and look at his incoming messages. Writing messages in portrait mode will be impossible without a vertical virtual keyboard, but it is less important as people check on messages way more frequently than write them.

2. Portrait oriented lists can contain much more entries than landscape lists, so a user can see more messages at once when quickly checking his email/IM status.

1 solutions for this brainstorm.

I use IMAP specifically so I can use any client on any machine and see all of my mails. I don't want any client storing things locally, except as a cache. Thus, I'd like to keep my Sent and Drafts folders on my IMAP server.

11 solutions for this brainstorm.

Google calendar is a very popular calendar service and I think it
should be supported on the Calendar application for better and
complete user experience.

It seems that you can sync google calendar using Mail for
Exchange, but this support is limited. The limited support of
Google calendars in MfE will only allow synchronizing the first
calendar in your google calendars. Consider how limiting this is
in this example:

Let's say you have two calendars, a personal calendar and a
business calendar. With existing support, you can only
synchronize personal calendar and not the business calendar.

It makes the transparent syncing of Android very attractive in
comparison.

3 solutions for this brainstorm.

As per https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1889

Camera support in Flash was intentionally disabled. it was actually technically working at one point (accidentally). among other things, [Nokia are] afraid of pages managing to get users to accidentally enable the camera and the privacy concerns that entails."

Forum thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40097

Although I can understand 'afraid of pages managing to get users to
accidentally enable the camera', it's difficult to do this accidentally (each
domain generates an in-Flash prompt on each access) and it's not an issue in
other operating systems (i.e. desktop Linux, Mac, Windows) even where those do
not have hardware 'camera in use' lights.

If the N900 is advertised as 'full Flash 9', and it has a camera (or two), it
just seems odd that neither work in the Player.

I understand it may require work from Adobe as well as Nokia, but if it's more
a case of turning it back on than actually writing it, why can't this be done ?

If it doesn't support the devices camera, I think refering to it as 'full
Flash' of either v9 or v10.1 is a bit disingenuous.

You wouldn't expect with (say) a laptop computer that came with a built in
camera to be unable to use that in Flash...

1 solutions for this brainstorm.

Providing support for Generic Access Network (GAN)/Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA)

The N900 does not currently support Generic Network Access (GAN), which is often also referred to by its implementation, "Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA)". This is a feature that, if implemented by a mobile provider, allows acess to a 3G/GSM network through a generic Internet (IP) connection. In the case of the N900, this would be an 802.11 Wi-fi connection. This allows voice calls and SMS in places that have poor or zero cellular signal reception (e.g. basements, shielded buildings). This also effectively bypasses the need to purchase a separate Femtocell.

GAN is currently supported by multiple operators, including T-Mobile and Orange. It is supported on multiple smartphones, including Nokia's 6301, 6086, 7510 (According to Wikipedia)

The protocol is defined in 3GPP TS 43.318 and 3GPP TS 44.318. I see no requirements that would prevent a software implementation of this feature in the N900.

Link to brainstorm discussion thread

(This has been discussed in a more general sense on this thread.)

2 solutions for this brainstorm.
