Open source software distributed via store.ovi.com

Posted on 2009-11-21 20:04 UTC by Quim Gil. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Marketing, maemo.org, Other.

The Ovi Store has no problems in the publication and distribution of open source software per se. But in order to be approved as Ovi publisher you need to meet certain legal requirements usually not met by individual free software developers or even more complex projects handled by volunteers. In practice this means that open source applications don't have a simple way to reach end users via Ovi.

This might be a missed opportunity for open source software to get the acknowledge of average Nokia customers and to compete side by side with non-free / commercial alternatives.

Donations are not simplified and not enough emphasized

I think the donation system is not enough put forward for Free Software (Free and Open Source Software).

With some software (Free (FOSS) or no-Free), we can't propose customized features or services, in exchange for remuneration, for businesses. And some developers (principally those are not customary with philosophy of Free Software) are not make free software of this type because with their software, principally for the general public, they want to earn a little money.

Nokia will propose a service that allows users to make, with very little click, donations to the developers / teams they wish to support.

Maemo Merchandise Store

Posted on 2009-10-26 06:48 UTC by Kasi Viswanath. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Marketing, Other.

Considering that Maemo already has got some traction with people all around the world, it might be a good idea to promote it further by selling Maemo Merchandise. This would also satisfy Maemo's fans/well-wishers in getting those t-shirt which they only currently dream of :)

The Maemo Merchandise Store (MMS) can start with the regular common stuff like T-shirts, tea/coffee mugs, water bottles, usb drives, caps, stickers, etc.

This can be done either by Nokia or by someone interested (or experienced in this stuff) from the community. Either may choose to do this for a reasonable profit too.

Throw in your votes if you think this is well-worth it. Enough votes might actually turn this into reality!

EDIT: Interesting discussion and any possible doubts on licensing issues clarified here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=358341#post358341 (Thanks @Texrat)

Distribute future testing firmware to trusted contributors

There was a big discussion for Bug 5315 3 Mobile SIM card rejected @ https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5315 regarding the disclosure of the latest firmware for testing this bug.

It's true that open source doesn't mean you must publish everything, but it does defeat the main point of open source development, which is to do with an open and involve contributions from the community.

It would be ideal to distribute future testing firmwares to trusted contributors in different continents to speed up the testing and verifying issues has been fixed, by doing so, it will significantly improve the turn-around time for the release of new firmwares, at the same time speed up and improve development.
