Open source software distributed via store.ovi.com

Posted on 2009-11-21 20:04 UTC by Quim Gil. Status: Under consideration, Categories: Marketing, maemo.org, Other.

The Ovi Store has no problems in the publication and distribution of open source software per se. But in order to be approved as Ovi publisher you need to meet certain legal requirements usually not met by individual free software developers or even more complex projects handled by volunteers. In practice this means that open source applications don't have a simple way to reach end users via Ovi.

This might be a missed opportunity for open source software to get the acknowledge of average Nokia customers and to compete side by side with non-free / commercial alternatives.

Google Calendar & Contacts synchronization

Google Calendar and Google Contacts are a popular way to manage PIM data "in the cloud". They are available nicely through the Google Apps web interfaces, and are supported for synchronization by many applications ranging from Apple's OS X desktop to iPhone and GNOME Evolution. However, on Maemo there is no way to synchronize them.

Donations are not simplified and not enough emphasized

I think the donation system is not enough put forward for Free Software (Free and Open Source Software).

With some software (Free (FOSS) or no-Free), we can't propose customized features or services, in exchange for remuneration, for businesses. And some developers (principally those are not customary with philosophy of Free Software) are not make free software of this type because with their software, principally for the general public, they want to earn a little money.

Nokia will propose a service that allows users to make, with very little click, donations to the developers / teams they wish to support.

Hardware-Keys should control Media-Player, even when locked

Posted on 2009-06-17 09:55 UTC by Keywan Najafi Tonekaboni. Status: In development, milestone: Harmattan, Categories: Media, Devices.

I want to use the Internet-Tablets as a media-player (like iPod). But it's difficult to change a song or the volume, when it's locked in my pocket. The hardware-keys like (+),(-) and (toggle fullscren) could be used to control media-player, even though touchscreen and keyboard is locked.
