What is a repository?

Quoting from wikipedia (TM):
"A repository is a directory containing packages along with an index file."

Maemo has several repositories which are meant for developers and end-users.
The repositories for developers are to be used with the maemo Software Development Kit (SDK).
End-user repositories are the "maemo extras" repositories where you can access 3rd party applications developed and provided by members of the maemo community. "Maemo extras" are available for Nokia 770 and Nokia N800, ie. we have extras repo separately for 770 and N800 users.

Please find more information in the wiki.

Why does application 'x' not install with a single click, even though it is marked to run on OS ...

Short answer: ask application developers why. Nobody knows this better.

Long answer:

Developers maybe did not created .install file at all. Either because too lazy or because app is too bugged at this moment to offer it for general public. Ask developers about this.

Some apps do not have repositories and have to be manually installed from .deb file(s). Usually this is apps intended for advanced users or just not well tested apps. If you think that some app is great and still too hard to install, ask developers. You may also want to use Maemo's project page and create feature request as well so developers will become aware about your wishes ;)

For example, application may depend on extra component which is exists in another separate repository which should be added before installing app itself. Well known example is Pidgin. You have to add not just a Pidgin's repository but "Maemo Hackers" repository as well since Pidgin depends on some libraries from "Maemo Hackers" repository. Probably that's why there is no one-click install for Pidgin.

Why are there so many repositories?

Possible reasons are (just guessing):

Probably because some developers are just not aware that it is a good idea to upload all applications into single place.

It could be reasonable to test alpha-quality applications in "semi-private" environment rather than offer unskilled users to try bugged apps and break their devices. So it could be still reasonable for some apps - adding repository is an extra step which will allow to have fewer unskilled users breaking their devices and coping with bugs while having no skills to fix device or write good bug reports.

For some developers it just more comfortable to manage their own repository. This is probably because it requires no any extra efforts from developer to get access to repository and to fully manage it as developer wishes to.Once you own a server, you already have full access to it so just set up a repository and ready to rock'n'roll. When server is not your own, you have to ask for access, wait, prove you're trustable people somehow, etc and your access still could be somehow limited for security reasons. This does not makes developer's life easier and dev's are lazy, just like anyone else.

How to report catalog bugs?

Please use our bug tracker at garage if you experience any of the following while logged in:

can not edit an application

can not submit a new application

strange messages appear upon adding an application

etc.

Do not report bugs if a catalog item is wrong or contains outdated information. These problems are not considered as bugs in the catalog software itself.
